Star Player Calls Second Test ‘Massive’; Rugby Legend Embarks on New Role at Welsh Rugby Union
Fly-half Gareth Anscombe has described the upcoming match against South Africa as ‘massive’ for Wales.
With the series tied at one win apiece, Wales know that defeat against the Springboks in Bloemfontein on Saturday will see them lose the series due to being ranked lower than their rivals.
Speaking to the media, Anscombe spoke of the importance of the match.
“It’s a massive game for us. We know what’s at stake. We’re going to have to put in a big performance to get the win.”
The fly-half, who is playing his first Test series since the 2019 World Cup due to a serious knee injury, also praised the performances of young players such as Joe Hawkins and Christ Tshiunza on the tour to South Africa.
“It’s been great to see some of the young boys come through and play so well,” he said. “They’ve got out there and shown what they can do.”
Meanwhile, former Wales captain Ryan Jones has been appointed as the new Head of Rugby Participation for the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).
Jones, who won 75 caps for his country between 2003 and 2014, will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to increase participation in rugby across Wales.
Speaking about his new role, Jones said: “I’m delighted to be joining the WRU at such an exciting time for Welsh rugby.
“I’m looking forward to working with everyone involved in the game to grow participation and inspire future generations of players.”
The WRU’s Chief Executive Steve Phillips welcomed Jones to the team.
“Ryan is a passionate and experienced rugby man who I know will be a valuable asset to the WRU,” he said. “His knowledge and expertise will be invaluable as we look to grow the game in Wales.”
Jones will take up his new role in September.
Kind regards C. Dixon.
