Ukraine has fulfilled conditions for further EU billions
EU must not delay disbursing aid, Ukrainian PM says
Ukraine has fulfilled all the conditions set by the EU for the disbursement of a new tranche of macro-financial assistance, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Friday (17 February).
The EU announced on 1 February that it would provide Ukraine with €18 billion in financial support in 2023. The support will be provided in the form of loans, with the first €3 billion to be disbursed in March.
To receive the €3 billion, Ukraine had to fulfil a number of conditions, including:
- adopting a law on the Supreme Court
- strengthening the fight against corruption
- improving the management of public finances
Shmyhal said that Ukraine had now met all of these conditions and that the EU should not delay disbursing the aid.
We have fulfilled all the conditions set by the EU. We hope that the disbursement of the first tranche will take place as soon as possible, Shmyhal said.
The EU has not yet said when it will disburse the first tranche of aid. However, the European Commission has said that it is working as quickly as possible to finalise the disbursement.
The EU’s financial support is essential for Ukraine, which is facing a significant budget deficit as a result of the war with Russia.
The Ukrainian government has said that it will use the EU aid to support the country’s budget, to finance essential services, and to help rebuild the country’s infrastructure.
The EU’s financial support is a clear sign of the EU’s commitment to Ukraine and to the country’s European future.
