A construction train derailed at Hamburg Central Station this morning, injuring six people. The train was carrying materials for a new high-speed rail line when it derailed at around 10:30 am.
The six injured people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, but Deutsche Bahn, the German rail operator, said that it was likely caused by a track defect.
The derailment caused significant disruption to train services at Hamburg Central Station, with many trains being cancelled or delayed. Deutsche Bahn said that it was working to restore services as soon as possible.
Eyewitness accounts
Eyewitnesses said that they heard a loud bang before the train derailed. One eyewitness, who was waiting for a train at the station, said: I heard a loud bang and then I saw the train derail. It was very frightening.
Another eyewitness, who was on the train, said: I was sitting in my seat when the train suddenly started to shake violently. I was thrown to the floor and I hit my head.
Investigation underway
Deutsche Bahn has launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment. The investigation will be led by the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA).
The EBA said that it would be looking at all possible causes of the derailment, including track defects, train maintenance, and human error.
Safety concerns
The derailment has raised concerns about the safety of the German rail network. In recent years, there have been several serious train accidents in Germany, including the Eschede train disaster in 1998, which killed 101 people.
Deutsche Bahn said that it was committed to safety and that it was taking all necessary steps to prevent future accidents.
