Surrey’s school district has received a $52 million funding boost from the provincial government to address overcrowding in its schools.
The funding will be used to:
- Create 2,000 new student spaces
- Expand existing schools
- Build new schools
The funding increase is part of the province’s $2 billion investment in capital projects for K-12 schools over the next three years.
Surrey’s school district is one of the fastest-growing in the province, with enrolment expected to increase by 10,000 students over the next five years.
“This funding will help us meet the needs of our growing student population,” said Surrey Schools Superintendent Jordan Tinney. “We are committed to providing all of our students with a quality education in a safe and welcoming learning environment.”
The funding will be used to create new student spaces at the following schools:
- Clayton Heights Secondary
- Fraser Heights Secondary
- Panorama Ridge Secondary
- Semiahmoo Secondary
- Sullivan Heights Secondary
The funding will also be used to expand the following schools:
- Bridgeview Elementary
- Cambridge Elementary
- Grandview Heights Elementary
- Holly Elementary
- Panorama Ridge Elementary
- Sullivan Heights Elementary
The new schools that will be built with the funding have not yet been announced.
The funding increase is a welcome relief for Surrey’s school district, which has been struggling to keep up with the demand for student spaces.
“We are grateful for the provincial government’s investment in our school district,” said Tinney. “This funding will help us to continue to provide our students with the education they deserve.”
