Albrecht Glaser and Tino Chrupalla present themselves as alternatives to the traffic light coalition. Internally, they are at odds – about the course, the opposition role and the future of the AfD.
When it comes to the future of the AfD, the two party leaders Albrecht Glaser and Tino Chrupalla have completely different ideas. At the summer interviews of the ARD TV stations, the two clearly distanced themselves from each other on central issues such as the course of the party, the role of the opposition and the future of the AfD.
Glaser sees himself as a constructive opposition
Glaser emphasized that he wanted to lead the AfD as a constructive opposition with an offer-oriented policy. We need an opposition that doesn’t just oppose for the sake of opposing, but that makes suggestions and develops alternatives, said Glaser. Chrupalla, on the other hand, accused the traffic light coalition of a policy of failure. The AfD must therefore be a blocking opposition that prevents the worst.
Chrupalla for a blocking opposition
There were also differences in the assessment of the Ukraine war. Glaser called for an examination of the causes of the war and a diplomatic solution. Chrupalla, on the other hand, demanded that arms deliveries to Ukraine be stopped. He justified this with the argument that this would only prolong the war.
Different views on the future of the AfD
The two party leaders also have different views on the future of the AfD. Glaser wants to modernize the party and open it up to new members. He emphasized that the AfD must become a people’s party that is attractive to a broad spectrum of society. Chrupalla, on the other hand, wants to concentrate on the AfD’s core electorate. He said the party must remain faithful to its principles and not run after every trend.
AfD’s future is uncertain
It is still unclear which direction the AfD will take in the future. Glaser and Chrupalla represent two different concepts of the party. It remains to be seen which concept will prevail.
