A Missed Opportunity
Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, has expressed regret that he did not give more playing time to then-rookie Jayson Tatum during the 2017-18 season.
Tatum, who was then a 19-year-old, was selected by the Warriors with the third overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. However, he saw limited action during his rookie season, averaging just 13.9 minutes per game.
Kerr’s Explanation
In a recent interview, Kerr explained his reasoning for not giving Tatum more playing time.
At the time, we had a veteran team with a lot of talented players, Kerr said. I felt that we had a better chance of winning with our veteran players on the court.
Kerr also admitted that he underestimated Tatum’s potential.
I didn’t realize how special he was, Kerr said. I thought he was a good player, but I didn’t realize he was going to be a star.
Tatum’s Development
Tatum has since blossomed into one of the best young players in the NBA. He is now a three-time All-Star and has led the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals twice.
Kerr has said that he believes Tatum would have been even better if he had given him more playing time as a rookie.
I think he would have developed faster and would have been more comfortable in his role, Kerr said.
Lessons Learned
Kerr’s experience with Tatum has taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of giving young players a chance to prove themselves.
I think it’s important to give young players an opportunity to play, Kerr said. Even if they make mistakes, you have to let them learn and grow.
Kind regards L. Dyer.
