German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has warned that the world is facing a time of trials as it grapples with multiple crises, including the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change.
In a speech to the Bundestag, the German parliament, Steinmeier said that the world was at a turning point and that the choices made now would shape the future for generations to come.
We live in a time of trials, Steinmeier said. The war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change – these are just some of the challenges that we face. These are not just crises that we can overcome with a few quick fixes. They are challenges that will require us to rethink our entire way of life.
Steinmeier said that the war in Ukraine was a watershed moment in European history. He said that the war had shown that peace cannot be taken for granted and that aggression must be met with resistance.
We must never forget the lessons of the past, Steinmeier said. We must never allow ourselves to be divided by those who seek to sow discord. We must stand together, united in our defense of freedom and democracy.
Steinmeier also called for a global effort to combat climate change. He said that climate change was the greatest threat to our planet and that it was time for action.
We need to invest in renewable energy, we need to reduce our emissions, and we need to protect our forests and oceans, Steinmeier said. We need to act now, before it is too late.
Steinmeier concluded his speech by saying that the world was facing a time of trials, but that he was confident that humanity would overcome these challenges.
We have faced challenges before, and we have always found a way to overcome them, Steinmeier said. We will overcome these challenges too. We will build a better future for ourselves and for our children.
