Joseph Violated NFL Policy on Substance Abuse
The NFL has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Karl Joseph eight games for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse. The suspension is effective immediately.
Joseph, 28, was acquired by the Steelers in a trade with the Oakland Raiders in March 2021. He started 15 games for the Steelers in 2021, recording 77 tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.
This is the second time Joseph has been suspended by the NFL for violating its substance abuse policy. He was suspended four games in 2018 while a member of the Raiders.
Statement from the Steelers
We are aware of the suspension of Karl Joseph for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse, the Steelers said in a statement. We support the NFL’s efforts to promote a healthy and safe environment for our players. We will have no further comment at this time.
Impact on the Steelers
Joseph’s suspension is a significant blow to the Steelers’ defense. He was expected to start alongside Cameron Sutton at cornerback this season.
With Joseph out, the Steelers will likely turn to Ahkello Witherspoon or James Pierre to fill the void at cornerback. Witherspoon, 27, has started 28 games in his career, while Pierre, 23, has started just one game.
The Steelers open the regular season on September 11th against the Cincinnati Bengals.
