Residents urged to take precautions amid heavy rainfall
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the UK, with a ‘very high risk’ of flooding on Saturday.
Heavy rain is expected to batter the East Midlands, the North West and parts of Yorkshire and the Humber on Saturday, with up to 80mm (3 inches) of rainfall possible in some areas.
The Environment Agency has issued 20 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected and immediate action is required, and 57 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible and people should be prepared.
Residents in affected areas are urged to take precautions, such as clearing drains and guttering, moving belongings to higher ground, and checking flood risk maps.
The Met Office said the rain will be persistent and heavy and could lead to significant disruption.
There is a very high risk of flooding on Saturday, particularly in the East Midlands, the North West and parts of Yorkshire and the Humber, a Met Office spokesperson said.
We urge residents in these areas to take precautions and stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts.
The Environment Agency said it is monitoring the situation closely and has staff on standby to respond to any flooding incidents.
We are urging residents in affected areas to take action now to reduce the risk of flooding, an Environment Agency spokesperson said.
This includes clearing drains and guttering, moving belongings to higher ground, and checking flood risk maps.
The Environment Agency also advised people to avoid driving through floodwater, as even a small amount can be dangerous.
