PMQs Scorecard: Sunak Stumbles as Elphicke Defect to Labour
Sunak’s Rough Ride
Rishi Sunak faced a grilling from Labour leader Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) today. The Chancellor found himself on the back foot as Starmer pressed him on the cost of living crisis and the government’s handling of the pandemic.
Families are struggling to make ends meet, Starmer said. The Chancellor is failing to deliver on his promises.
Sunak admitted that the government could have done more to help people with the cost of living. However, he insisted that the government was doing everything we can to support the economy.
Elphicke’s Defection
In a major blow to the Conservatives, former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke defected to Labour today. Elphicke, who was found guilty of sexual assault last year, said he had lost confidence in the government’s ability to tackle corruption.
Elphicke’s defection is a sign of the growing dissatisfaction with Boris Johnson’s government. The Conservatives are now facing a by-election in Elphicke’s former constituency, Dover.
Labour’s Gain
Labour leader Keir Starmer welcomed Elphicke’s defection. He said that it showed that the Labour Party was a party of change.
Charlie Elphicke has seen the writing on the wall, Starmer said. He knows that the Conservative Party is finished.
Conservative Woes
The Conservative Party is facing a number of challenges. The party is deeply divided over Brexit, and there is growing anger over the government’s handling of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis.
The defection of Charlie Elphicke is a further blow to the Conservatives. The party is now facing a by-election in Dover, and there is a growing sense that Boris Johnson’s days as Prime Minister are numbered.
