Former First Round Pick Has Struggled With Injuries Throughout Career
The Pittsburgh Pirates have outright released right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. from their Triple-A Indianapolis roster. Honeywell, the 11th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and has not pitched in the major leagues since 2018.
Injury-Riddled Career
Honeywell has undergone three Tommy John surgeries, as well as surgeries on his hip and elbow. He missed the entire 2019 and 2020 seasons due to injury and has struggled to regain his form since then.
In 2021, Honeywell pitched in just 18 games for Indianapolis, posting a 5.47 ERA in 76.1 innings pitched. He allowed 100 hits, 57 walks, and struck out 79 batters.
Disappointing Return
Honeywell was hoping to make a comeback in 2022, but he was placed on the injured list in June with a shoulder injury. He returned to action in August, but struggled in his limited appearances.
In seven games for Indianapolis this season, Honeywell had a 7.88 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched. He allowed 18 hits, 12 walks, and struck out 15 batters.
Outright Release
The Pirates’ decision to outright release Honeywell is a sign that they have given up on the once-promising pitcher. Honeywell will now be free to sign with any other team, but it remains to be seen if he will be able to resurrect his career.
Kind regards Z. McDowell.
