Background
Australian captain Pat Cummins has been at the receiving end of backlash from Virat Kohli supporters on social media following the controversial run-out incident in the first Test between India and Australia in Nagpur.
The Incident
During the 71st over of India’s first innings, Kohli was dismissed via a run-out after Mohammed Siraj’s throw hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end. However, the replays showed that Kohli had made his ground before the throw hit the stumps.
The decision sparked outrage among Kohli fans, who accused Cummins of deliberately trying to run out the former Indian captain.
Cummins’ Response
Cummins has since addressed the backlash on social media. In a statement posted on his Twitter account, the Australian skipper said:
I want to address the incident that occurred yesterday involving the run-out of Virat Kohli. I’ve seen the footage and I understand why there is some controversy around the decision. However, I can assure you that there was no intent on my part to run out Virat Kohli. I was simply trying to field the ball and return it to the bowler.
I have the utmost respect for Virat Kohli and all the other Indian players. I’m a big fan of Virat Kohli and I have never done anything to intentionally harm or disrespect him.
I hope that this matter can now be put behind us and we can focus on the rest of the Test series in the spirit of good sportsmanship.
Reaction from Kohli and BCCI
Kohli has not yet publicly commented on the incident. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also not issued any statement.
Conclusion
The run-out incident has been a major talking point in the first Test between India and Australia. Cummins’ response has likely eased some of the tensions, but it remains to be seen whether the controversy will have a lasting impact on the series.
Kind regards
