Red Sox Outfielder DFA to Make Room for Jeter Downs
Reyes Claimed by Pirates
The Red Sox have designated outfielder Pablo Reyes for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Jeter Downs, who was acquired in a trade with the Dodgers on Saturday.
Reyes, 26, was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Tuesday. He was hitting .213 with one home run and four RBIs in 52 games for the Red Sox this season.
Downs, 24, is a highly-touted prospect who was the Dodgers’ No. 2 prospect and ranked No. 33 overall by MLB Pipeline prior to the 2022 season. He is a versatile infielder who can play shortstop, second base, and third base.
Reyes was a key contributor to the Red Sox’ World Series victory in 2018, but he has struggled to find a consistent role with the team in recent seasons. He was optioned to Triple-A Worcester multiple times in 2021 and 2022.
The Red Sox are hoping that Downs can provide a spark to their offense, which has struggled mightily this season. The team is currently last in the majors in runs scored and on-base percentage.
Kind regards, Z. McDowell.
