League Proposes 17th Regular Season Game
The NFL is considering expanding the regular season to 17 games, but New York Giants co-owner John Mara says he is not a fan of the proposal.
I think we have a good thing going right now, Mara said at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Florida. I don’t think we need to change anything.
The league has been discussing the possibility of expanding the regular season for several years. Proponents of the change argue that it would add more excitement to the regular season and generate more revenue for the league. Opponents argue that it would increase the risk of injuries and put too much strain on players.
Mara’s Concerns
Mara echoed the concerns of many opponents of the expanded schedule, saying that he is worried about the increased risk of injuries. He also said that he believes that the current 16-game schedule is perfect and that adding another game would water down the regular season.
I think the 16-game schedule is a good balance between having enough games to determine who the best teams are and not having too many games that it becomes a grind, Mara said.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that he is open-minded about the possibility of expanding the regular season, but he has also acknowledged the concerns of opponents. He said that the league will continue to discuss the issue and that no decision will be made until after the 2023 season.
Owners Divided
The NFL owners are divided on the issue of expanding the regular season. Some owners, like Mara, are opposed to the change, while others believe that it would be a positive move for the league.
The league’s Competition Committee is expected to discuss the issue further at its meeting in May. The committee will then make a recommendation to the full ownership group, which will vote on the proposal at the NFL owners meetings in March 2024.
Kind regards J. Brown.
