Steelers Running Back Expresses Desire to Remain in Pittsburgh, but Understands the Realities of the NFL
Najee Harris, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ standout running back, has made it clear that he wants to stay with the team for the long haul. However, he also acknowledges the business side of the NFL and knows that anything can happen.
I absolutely want to be a Steeler for life, Harris said. I love this city, I love this organization, and I love my teammates. But I also understand that this is a business, and things can change at any moment.
Harris is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and he is set to become a free agent after the 2023 season. While he is hopeful to sign an extension with the Steelers, he knows that he needs to perform at a high level in order to earn a new deal.
I’m just focused on this season and helping the Steelers win games, Harris said. I know that if I play well, everything else will take care of itself.
Harris has been one of the Steelers’ most consistent players since being drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He led the team in rushing yards and touchdowns as a rookie, and he was named to the Pro Bowl. He followed that up with another strong season in 2022, rushing for over 1,000 yards and scoring eight touchdowns.
Harris’s production on the field has made him a fan favorite in Pittsburgh, and he is widely considered to be one of the best young running backs in the NFL. However, he is also aware of the fact that the NFL is a business, and that anything can happen.
I’m not going to lie, it’s definitely weird to think about playing for another team, Harris said. But I know that it’s a possibility, and I’m prepared for whatever happens.
For now, Harris is focused on helping the Steelers win games. He is confident that he can continue to be a productive player for the team, and he is hopeful that he will be able to sign a new contract with the Steelers in the near future.
However, he also understands that the NFL is a business, and that anything can happen.
Harris’s Stats:
- 2,401 rushing yards
- 20 rushing touchdowns
- 1 Pro Bowl selection
