Day 2: The Texas Rangers Stand Out
The second day of the 2024 MLB Draft saw the Texas Rangers make a big splash, selecting two highly touted prospects with their first two picks. The Rangers selected shortstop/third baseman Konnor Griffin at 33rd overall and right-handed pitcher Rex Green at 48th overall. Griffin is a 6’2, 195-pound switch-hitter who was considered one of the best all-around players in the draft. He has a strong arm, quick reflexes, and a natural ability to hit the ball to all fields. Green is a 6’5, 220-pound right-hander who throws a fastball in the mid-90s and has a devastating changeup. He is considered to have one of the best fastballs in the draft class.
Other notable selections on Day 2 included outfielder Justin Crawford (son of former All-Star Carl Crawford) going 41st overall to the Detroit Tigers, right-handed pitcher Jared Jones going 55th overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and shortstop Trevin Michael going 58th overall to the Boston Red Sox.
Day 3: The Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks Make Big Moves
The third and final day of the 2024 MLB Draft saw the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks make some big moves. The Pirates selected right-handed pitcher Anthony Coffey at 79th overall and third baseman Alec Bell at 82nd overall. Coffey is a 6’4, 220-pound right-hander who throws a fastball in the mid-90s and has a developing changeup. Bell is a 6’3, 195-pound switch-hitter who has a smooth swing and a knack for hitting the ball hard. The Diamondbacks selected shortstop Gage West at 80th overall and outfielder Anthony Perry at 87th overall. West is a 6’1, 185-pound left-handed hitter who has a good eye at the plate and a quick swing. Perry is a 6’2, 200-pound right-handed hitter who has a strong arm and a lot of raw power.
Other notable selections on Day 3 included outfielder JJ Schwarz going 102nd overall to the Kansas City Royals, right-handed pitcher Ryan Cowan going 107th overall to the Toronto Blue Jays, and first baseman Keon Johnson going 111th overall to the Chicago Cubs.
The 2024 MLB Draft was a successful one for all 30 teams, as many talented players were selected. It will be interesting to see how these players develop in the coming years and which ones will eventually make it to the Major Leagues.
