Festa Designated for Assignment
The New York Mets have released right-handed pitcher Matt Festa, the team announced Saturday. Festa was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for outfielder Tim Locastro, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs earlier this week.
Festa’s Tenure with the Mets
Festa, 29, joined the Mets as a non-roster invitee to spring training in 2021 and made the Opening Day roster. He appeared in 50 games that season, pitching to a 4.45 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 44.1 innings.
In 2022, Festa’s role diminished, as he made just 19 appearances and struggled with his control, walking 14 batters in 14 innings. He finished the season with a 7.00 ERA.
Mets Look for Bullpen Depth
With Festa’s release, the Mets now have one open spot in their bullpen. Locastro, who is primarily an outfielder, can also fill in as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement.
The Mets are expected to continue searching for bullpen depth in the coming weeks, either through free agency or trades. Several veteran relievers are still available on the market, including Brad Hand, Andrew Chafin, and David Robertson.
Festa’s Future Prospects
Festa will now have the opportunity to seek a minor league contract with another team. He will likely hope to regain his 2021 form and earn another chance in the majors.
Kind regards
