Mass Evacuation Ordered in Fort Nelson, B.C., Ahead of Approaching Wildfire
Residents of Fort Nelson, prepare to evacuate.
The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality has issued an evacuation order for the entire community of Fort Nelson, British Columbia, as a wildfire burning nearby continues to grow and approach the town.
The order came into effect at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023, and affects all residents and businesses within the community.
Evacuation routes and reception centres
Residents are advised to evacuate immediately to the following reception centres:
- Northern Lights College in Fort St. John
- EnCana Events Centre in Dawson Creek
- South Peace Secondary School in Taylor
The wildfire, known as the Battleship Mountain fire, is currently burning approximately 15 kilometres southwest of Fort Nelson and is estimated to be 10,000 hectares in size.
The fire is burning out of control and is being fanned by strong winds, making it difficult for firefighters to contain.
Help is on the way.
The B.C. Wildfire Service is sending additional resources to the area, including over 100 firefighters, 10 helicopters and six air tankers.
The Canadian Red Cross is also on standby to provide assistance to evacuees.
