Marlins Sign Matt Andriese
Versatile hurler adds depth to Miami’s rotation
The Miami Marlins have signed right-handed pitcher Matt Andriese to a one-year contract, the team announced on Wednesday. The deal reportedly includes a club option for the 2024 season.
Andriese, 33, is a veteran of nine major league seasons. He spent the past two years with the Chicago White Sox, posting a combined 11-17 record with a 4.63 ERA in 43 starts.
A versatile pitcher, Andriese has experience both as a starter and reliever. He started 31 games for the White Sox in 2022, finishing with a 4.58 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 163.1 innings pitched.
The Marlins are hoping that Andriese can provide some much-needed depth to their starting rotation. Miami’s rotation struggled last season, finishing with a 5.08 ERA, which was the third-worst mark in the National League.
Andriese is expected to compete for a spot in the Marlins’ rotation this spring. He could also be used as a long reliever or spot starter.
The signing of Andriese is the latest move by the Marlins to improve their pitching staff. Miami has also signed starter Johnny Cueto and reliever Richard Bleier this offseason.
The Marlins are hoping that the additions of Andriese, Cueto, and Bleier will help them improve upon their disappointing 2022 season. Miami finished with a 69-93 record last year, which was the second-worst mark in the NL.
The Marlins are scheduled to open the 2023 season on March 30 at home against the New York Mets.
