A Young Girl’s Journey to Seizure Freedom
Choc Children’s Hospital’s epilepsy program offers a comprehensive approach to seizure care, including medications, surgery and diet therapies, and vagus nerve stimulation.
Meet the Patient:
Sarah was a vibrant and active 5-year-old girl who suddenly began experiencing seizures after a febrile illness. Despite trying several medications, her seizures continued to worsen in frequency and intensity. Seizures affected her ability to learn, play, and participate in social activities.
Deciding on Vagus Nerve Stimulation:
After careful evaluation, Sarah’s doctors at CHOC recommended vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy. VNS is a surgical procedure that involves implanting a small device under the skin on the chest and connecting it to the vagus nerve. The device delivers electrical impulses to the nerve, which helps control seizures.
The VNS Procedure:
Sarah underwent VNS surgery in 2017 and has been using the device ever since. The procedure was minimally invasive and Sarah recovered quickly.
Sarah’s Progress:
Since starting VNS, Sarah’s seizures have decreased significantly in frequency and severity. She now experiences fewer than one seizure per month, compared to multiple seizures per day prior to surgery. Her quality of life has improved dramatically. She is now able to attend school regularly, participate in extracurricular activities, and enjoy spending time with her friends and family.
How Does VNS Work?
VNS works by modulating the activity of the vagus nerve, which is responsible for regulating various bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and seizure activity. Electrical impulses from the VNS device stimulate the nerve, which then transmits signals to the brain, helping to reduce seizure activity.
