Australian women’s rugby sevens player Faith Nathan has spoken of her pride after the team secured a berth in the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
The Wallaroos will face New Zealand in the last four after beating France 24-19 in their quarter-final on Friday.
Nathan, who scored a try in the victory, said it was an unbelievable feeling to reach the semi-finals.
It’s just such a proud moment for us, she said. We’ve worked so hard for this and it’s finally paid off.
Nathan said the team had shown great resilience to come back from a 12-point deficit against France.
We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we never gave up, she said. We just kept fighting and we got the win in the end.
Nathan said she was particularly pleased to score a try in the victory.
It was an amazing feeling, she said. I just saw the space and I went for it. It was great to be able to contribute to the team’s win.
The Wallaroos will now face their toughest test yet when they take on New Zealand in the semi-finals.
New Zealand are the reigning Olympic champions and have won the last four World Cups.
Nathan said the team was under no illusions about the challenge they faced, but she was confident they could cause an upset.
We know it’s going to be a tough game, but we’re going to go out there and give it our all, she said. We’re a team of fighters and we’re never going to give up.
The Wallaroos will face New Zealand in the semi-finals on Saturday at 12:45pm AEST.
Kind regards E. Thompson.
