1. Acquire a Top-Six Forward
The Flames have a solid top line, but they need more depth up front. They could use a player who can play wing or center and contribute offensively. Some potential targets include David Perron, Andrew Copp, and Calle Jarnkrok.
2. Improve the Defense
The Flames’ defense was a bit of a weak link last season. They could use a puck-moving defenseman who can help them generate offense. Some potential targets include Dougie Hamilton, John Klingberg, and Anton Stralman.
3. Sign Johnny Gaudreau
Johnny Gaudreau is the Flames’ best player, and he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Flames need to do everything they can to sign him to a long-term contract.
4. Find a Backup Goalie
Jacob Markstrom is a good starting goalie, but the Flames need a reliable backup. Some potential targets include Jaroslav Halak, Martin Jones, and Laurent Brossoit.
5. Improve the Power Play
The Flames’ power play was one of the worst in the NHL last season. They need to find a way to generate more chances and score more goals. Some potential solutions include adding a new power play coach or signing a player who can quarterback the power play.
The Flames have a lot of work to do this offseason, but they have the potential to be a contender next season. If they can address their key needs, they should be in a good position to make a run at the Stanley Cup.
