Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat: May 14, 2024
Hello and welcome to my first chat of the 2024 season!
I hope everyone had a good time during the offseason and that you all are looking forward to what should be another great year of baseball.
I hope everyone had a good time during the offseason and that you all are looking forward to what should be another great year of baseball.
As always, I’m here to answer your questions about anything and everything baseball-related, so fire away.
Answer: Shane McClanahan, Gerrit Cole, and Spencer Turnbull are my top three AL Cy Young picks right now. McClanahan is coming off a breakout season in which he finished with a 3.43 ERA and 10.3 K/9, and he has the stuff to be even better in 2024. Cole is a perennial Cy Young contender, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Turnbull is a rising star who has the potential to be a true ace. He finished with a 3.66 ERA and 10.0 K/9 in 2023.
Answer: Corbin Burnes, Sandy Alcantara, and Trevor Rogers are my top three NL Cy Young picks right now. Burnes is the reigning NL Cy Young winner, and he’s one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. Alcantara is another young star who is coming off a breakout season in which he finished with a 2.28 ERA and 9.3 K/9. Rogers is a rising star who has the potential to be a true ace. He finished with a 2.64 ERA and 9.8 K/9 in 2023.
Answer: The Houston Astros and the New York Yankees are my picks to win the AL and NL pennants, respectively. The Astros have been the most dominant team in baseball over the last few years, and they don’t show any signs of slowing down. The Yankees have a lot of young talent, and they’re finally starting to put it all together. I think they’re the team to beat in the AL East.
That’s all for today’s chat. Thanks for all the great questions! I’ll be back next week to answer more of your questions.
Kind regards,
Z. McDowell
