Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee: National Security Law a ‘Powerful Tool’
Hails ‘One Country, Two Systems’ Framework, Calls for Unity on 25th Anniversary of Handover from British Rule
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee has described the National Security Law (NSL) as a powerful tool in maintaining stability and security in the city, as it marked the 25th anniversary of the handover from British rule on July 1.
In a speech at a flag-raising ceremony, Lee hailed the One Country, Two Systems framework that has governed Hong Kong since its return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, saying it has ensured the city’s prosperity and stability.
National Security Law: A ‘Powerful Tool’
Lee said the NSL, which was imposed by Beijing in 2020, has been effective in safeguarding national security and preventing terrorism and secessionist activities in Hong Kong.
The NSL has been a powerful tool in maintaining stability and security in Hong Kong. It has effectively prevented and suppressed acts that endanger national security, and has helped to restore stability to our society, he said.
Critics of the NSL have argued that it has been used to suppress dissent and curtail civil liberties in Hong Kong, but Lee maintained that it only targets a small number of individuals and organizations that pose a threat to national security.
The vast majority of Hong Kong people are law-abiding citizens who have nothing to fear from the NSL. It is only those who engage in activities that endanger national security who need to be concerned, he said.
‘One Country, Two Systems’ Framework
Lee also praised the One Country, Two Systems framework, saying it has allowed Hong Kong to maintain its unique identity and way of life while being part of China.
He said the framework has been an important factor in Hong Kong’s success and has allowed the city to remain a vibrant and prosperous international metropolis.
We must continue to uphold and develop the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework, he said. It is the best way to ensure the long-term stability and prosperity of Hong Kong.
Call for Unity
Lee called for unity among Hong Kong people, saying that it is essential for the city’s future.
We must work together to build a better future for Hong Kong. We must overcome our differences and work towards a common goal, he said.
Only by working together can we ensure that Hong Kong remains a successful and prosperous city for generations to come.
The handover anniversary was marked by a series of events in Hong Kong, including a flag-raising ceremony, a parade, and a fireworks display. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Hong Kong, saying that the city has made remarkable achievements since its return to Chinese sovereignty.
