Assistant Coach Chris Fichtner Discouraged Rehearsing Game-Winning Play in Practice
Fichtner Hopes to Win Close Games
Assistant head coach Chris Fichtner never wants the Steelers to be caught unprepared for a game-winning scenario, but he also doesn’t want to jinx them by practicing it too much. It’s a delicate balance that he hopes to master the rest of the year.
You don’t want to rehearse it so much that it becomes stale or robotic, Fichtner said. But you also want to make sure that your players are comfortable with the situation and know what to do in those moments.
The Steelers have been in several close games this season, including a 23-20 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12. Fichtner said that game was a good example of how important it is to be prepared for anything.
The Steelers will have another chance to practice their game-winning plays this week as they prepare for a Week 13 matchup against the New York Jets. Fichtner said he will be looking for his players to show improvement in all aspects of their game, especially in the red zone.
We need to be more efficient in the red zone, Fichtner said. We’ve had some opportunities to score touchdowns, but we haven’t capitalized on them.
The Steelers are currently 6-5 and in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC North. Fichtner said that the team is focused on taking things one game at a time and that they believe they have what it takes to make a run at the playoffs.
We have a good football team, Fichtner said. We’re going to keep working hard and we’re going to keep improving. We believe in ourselves and we believe that we can win a championship.
