In a letter to Harvard University, billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin has urged the institution to prioritize Western values in response to recent student protests.
‘Cultural Revolution-Like Atmosphere’
Griffin, a major donor to Harvard, wrote that he was concerned about the cultural revolution-like atmosphere that he believes is gripping American campuses.
I write to express my deep concern about the growing hostility toward open inquiry, free speech, and Western values that I have observed on college campuses across the country, including at Harvard, Griffin wrote.
Western Heritage Under Threat
Griffin argued that the protests, which have often focused on issues of race and social justice, are threatening Western heritage.
The protesters are seeking to dismantle the very foundations of our society, including the principles of free speech, due process, and equal opportunity, he wrote. They are also attacking the Western canon and the principles of meritocracy and individualism that have made our country great.
Call for Reassertion of Western Values
Griffin urged Harvard to take a stand against the protesters and to reassert the importance of Western values.
- Strengthening free speech protections on campus
- Ensuring that students are exposed to a diverse range of viewpoints
- Prioritizing academic excellence and meritocracy
The future of our country depends on our ability to preserve our Western values, Griffin wrote. I urge you to take immediate action to address this crisis and to ensure that Harvard remains a beacon of academic freedom and intellectual excellence.
Response from Harvard
Harvard has not yet publicly responded to Griffin’s letter.
