Macron’s centrist alliance and the left-wing Nupes coalition are both hoping to deny Marine Le Pen’s National Rally a significant presence in the National Assembly.
Polls suggest the far-right party could win up to 50 seats, but both the centrists and the left are determined to keep them out of power.
The first round of the French legislative elections saw Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance Ensemble! (Together!) win the most votes, but they fell short of an absolute majority. This means that Macron will need to form alliances with other parties in order to govern. The left-wing coalition Nupes (New Popular Ecological and Social Union) came second, and they are also hoping to form a coalition with other parties in order to prevent the far-right National Rally from gaining a significant presence in the National Assembly.
The National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, won 18.68% of the vote in the first round, and they are hoping to win up to 50 seats in the National Assembly. This would be a significant increase on the eight seats they currently hold. However, both Ensemble! and Nupes are determined to keep the National Rally out of power.
The second round of the French legislative elections will be held on June 19. The outcome of the election will determine the future of French politics, and it will have a significant impact on the country’s ability to address the challenges it faces.
Kind regards E. Thompson.
