Magnificent Brazilian Takes Checkered Flag in Barcelona Sprint Race
High-Flying Henrique Bortoleto has joined the 2023 Formula 2 Championship title race after claiming a stunning maiden victory in the Barcelona Sprint Race. The 22-year-old Brazilian, who won last year’s FIA Formula 3 Championship, put in a dominant performance to secure his first F2 triumph.
Starting from fourth on the grid, Bortoleto made a blistering start, swiftly moving into second place behind pole-sitter Clement Novalak. The PREMA Racing driver then relentlessly pressured the Frenchman, forcing him into an error on lap 14. Bortoleto seized the opportunity, overtaking Novalak with a daring move around the outside at Turn 1.
Once in the lead, Bortoleto displayed his impressive racecraft, maintaining a comfortable gap to his pursuers. He controlled the pace, expertly managing his tires and responding perfectly to the Safety Car interventions that punctuated the race. As the checkered flag waved, Bortoleto crossed the line with a commanding 2.6-second advantage over second-placed Isack Hadjar.
Victory Propels Bortoleto into Title Contention
Bortoleto’s victory propelled him from ninth to fifth in the F2 championship standings. He now sits just 25 points behind championship leader Alexander Smolyar, setting the stage for an enthralling title race in the remaining rounds of the season.
Speaking after the race, a jubilant Bortoleto said: This is an incredible feeling. I’ve been working so hard for this moment, and it’s finally happened. The car was fantastic, and the team did an amazing job. I’m thrilled to have joined the title chase and can’t wait for the rest of the season.
