Former MLB Outfielder Signs with Independent League Team
Former New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Clint Frazier has signed with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League, an independent baseball league. The Dirty Birds announced the signing on July 19, 2023.
Frazier’s MLB Career
Frazier, 28, was a highly touted prospect who made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2017. He quickly became a fan favorite in New York, known for his infectious personality and impressive offensive skills. In 2019, he hit a career-high 33 home runs with 76 RBIs.
However, Frazier’s time with the Yankees was marred by injuries and inconsistent play. He was traded to the Pirates in February 2022, but his struggles continued in Pittsburgh. Frazier was released by the Pirates in May 2023 after batting just .226 with 2 home runs in 102 games.
Opportunity in Charleston
Frazier’s signing with the Dirty Birds provides him with an opportunity to rebuild his career. The Atlantic League is a highly competitive independent league that has produced several players who have gone on to successful MLB careers, including Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Brett Phillips and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt.
Dirty Birds manager Josh Bonifay is confident that Frazier can be a valuable asset to the team. Clint is a talented player who has a lot to prove, Bonifay said. We’re excited to have him join our team and we think he can be a difference-maker for us.
Next Steps for Frazier
Frazier is expected to join the Dirty Birds immediately and could make his debut as early as this weekend. The team is currently in the midst of a playoff race and Frazier’s addition could help them make a run for a championship.
If Frazier can regain his old form in Charleston, he could potentially earn another chance in the MLB. Several teams are always looking for talented outfielders, and a strong performance in the Atlantic League could put Frazier back on their radar.
