After 12-Month Absence, Right-Handed Reliever Returns to Mound
The Milwaukee Brewers have activated right-handed reliever Devin Williams from the 60-day injured list, the team announced on Friday. Williams has been sidelined since last September after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow.
A Long-Awaited Return
Williams’ return to the Brewers’ bullpen is a significant boost for a team that has struggled to find consistent relief pitching this season. The 28-year-old was one of the most dominant relievers in baseball in 2020, posting a 0.33 ERA and striking out 53 batters in 27 innings pitched. He was named to the National League All-Star team and finished seventh in the NL Cy Young Award voting.
Williams’ absence was a major blow to the Brewers’ bullpen last year. The team finished with a 4.84 ERA, the second-worst in the National League. The Brewers are hoping that Williams’ return will help stabilize their bullpen and improve their chances of making a playoff run this season.
Gradual Return to the Mound
Williams is expected to begin his rehab assignment in the minors before rejoining the Brewers’ bullpen later this month. The Brewers are limiting him to one inning per appearance initially as he builds up his stamina and arm strength.
Williams’ return is a welcome sight for the Brewers and their fans. The right-hander is one of the most talented relievers in the game, and his presence will give the Brewers a much-needed boost as they make a push for the playoffs.
Kind regards Z. McDowell.
