Suella Braverman, the former attorney general, has said that Rishi Sunak needs to take ownership of the Conservatives’ recent losses and shift policies.
She told The Telegraph: We need to take ownership of the losses that we have had. We need to shift policies. We need to rediscover our mission. And we need to do it quickly. We can’t procrastinate any longer.
Braverman’s comments come after the Tories lost two by-elections in Tiverton and Honiton and Wakefield. The losses were seen as a sign of growing public dissatisfaction with the government.
Braverman is not the only Conservative MP to call for a change in direction. Former chancellor Sajid Javid has also said that the government needs to change course.
It remains to be seen whether Sunak will listen to the calls for change. However, the pressure is mounting on him to act. The Conservatives are now facing a tough battle to win the next general election, which is due to take place in 2024.
Here are some of the changes that Braverman and others have called for:
- A cut in taxes
- A reduction in immigration
- A focus on law and order
- A commitment to traditional values
It is not yet clear whether Sunak will adopt these policies. However, he will need to come up with some new ideas if he wants to win back the support of voters.
Kind regards E. Thompson.
