Colombia condemns Israel’s use of ‘disproportionate force’ against Palestinians
Bogota has suspended diplomatic relations with Israel over its ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, which it has condemned as genocidal.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Colombian Foreign Ministry said it had decided to suspend diplomatic relations with the State of Israel, effective immediately.
The ministry said it had taken the decision in light of the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force by the Israeli government against the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
Colombia condemns these actions, which have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, including women and children, the statement said.
The ministry said it had also summoned the Israeli ambassador to Colombia to express our outrage and demand an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Colombia’s suspension of diplomatic relations with Israel is the latest in a series of diplomatic blows for the Jewish state.
In recent weeks, several other countries, including Brazil, Chile, and Peru, have recalled their ambassadors from Israel in protest at its conduct in Gaza.
The international community has been increasingly critical of Israel’s use of force in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 2,000 Palestinians, including more than 500 children.
The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire, and the United States has said it is deeply concerned about the situation.
Israel has defended its actions, saying it is acting in self-defense against Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza.
However, many observers have accused Israel of using excessive force, and of targeting civilians.
The suspension of diplomatic relations between Colombia and Israel is a significant development, and it is likely to put further pressure on Israel to end its military operations in Gaza.
