B.C. war veteran who raised $460K for children through annual birthday parties passes at 105
Duncan died in hospital Wednesday, surrounded by loved ones.
A life of service
Duncan McMaster, a war veteran and longtime fundraiser for children, has died at the age of 105.
Duncan was born in Vancouver in 1918 and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. After the war, he worked as a teacher and a principal in Vancouver and North Vancouver schools.
In 1978, Duncan began hosting annual birthday parties to raise money for Variety – The Children’s Charity. The parties were held at his North Vancouver home and featured live music, dancing, and food. Over the years, Duncan raised more than $460,000 for Variety, which supports children with special needs.
A remarkable legacy
Duncan was a kind and compassionate man who dedicated his life to helping others. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many children whose lives he touched.
Duncan is survived by his wife, Jean, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
