Austrian GP Crash Between Norris and Verstappen Overblown, Say Rivals
Hamilton Says it was a Racing Incident
Lewis Hamilton has weighed in on the controversial crash between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix, saying it was simply a racing incident.
The incident occurred on the opening lap of the race, when Verstappen attempted to overtake Norris around the outside of Turn 4. The two cars made contact, sending Norris into the gravel and out of the race. Verstappen was able to continue, but he was later penalized for causing the collision.
Some observers have criticized Verstappen for being too aggressive, but Hamilton said he doesn’t believe the Dutchman was at fault.
I think it was just a racing incident, Hamilton said. Lando was on the inside, Max was on the outside. They both went for the same piece of tarmac, and unfortunately, they made contact. It’s a shame for Lando, but these things happen in racing.
Sainz Agrees with Hamilton
Carlos Sainz, who finished third in the race, also agreed that the crash was not Verstappen’s fault.
I think it was a bit of a misunderstanding between the two drivers, Sainz said. Lando probably didn’t see Max coming, and Max probably didn’t see Lando leaving space. It’s just one of those things that happens in racing.
Sainz said he doesn’t think Verstappen deserves to be penalized for the incident.
I don’t think it was a deliberate act from Max, Sainz said. He’s a fair driver, and I don’t think he would do anything to intentionally hurt another driver.
Verstappen Apologizes
Verstappen has since apologized for the crash, saying he didn’t mean to hit Norris.
I’m sorry for what happened, Verstappen said. I didn’t mean to hit Lando, and I’m glad he’s okay. I was just trying to make a move, and I didn’t see him. It’s a shame that it ended the way it did, but that’s racing.
The incident is sure to be debated for some time, but it’s clear that the majority of the drivers believe it was simply a racing incident.
Kind regards
