Oakland adds depth to catching corps
The Oakland A’s have signed catcher Seth Elledge to a minor league contract, the team announced Wednesday.
Who is Seth Elledge?
Elledge, 29, is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound backstop who has spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs. In 2022, he appeared in 30 games for the Cubs, hitting .214 with two home runs and 10 RBIs.
Prior to joining the Cubs, Elledge spent five seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. He has a career minor league batting average of .266 with 47 home runs and 241 RBIs in 508 games.
Why did the A’s sign Elledge?
The A’s signed Elledge to add depth to their catching corps. The team’s current catching depth chart includes Sean Murphy, Shea Langeliers, and Jonah Heim.
Murphy is the A’s starting catcher and is one of the best young catchers in the game. Langeliers is a highly regarded prospect who is expected to take over as the starting catcher in the future.
Heim was acquired from the Texas Rangers in a trade this offseason. He is a veteran catcher who provides the A’s with a solid backup option.
What does this mean for the A’s?
The signing of Elledge gives the A’s a solid depth option at catcher. He is a veteran player who has experience in the major leagues and can provide the A’s with a quality backup option behind Murphy and Langeliers.
Elledge is also a good offensive player who can contribute to the A’s lineup. He has some pop in his bat and can hit for a decent average.
The A’s are hoping that Elledge can be a valuable contributor to the team in 2023. He gives the team a solid backup option at catcher and can also provide some offense off the bench.
Kind regards Z. McDowell.
