Group divided
Sixteen players have returned to AXA Training Centre in Kirkby for the first phase of pre-season but, for now, they have been divided into two groups.
Those who were involved in either the latter stages of the international calendar or the Champions League final have a slightly longer break, which means the bulk of the senior squad will not report back for another week.
New staff
Jurgen Klopp was joined by three new members of his backroom team at the session, with Pep Lijnders resuming his position as assistant manager having been promoted from his previous role as development coach.
Vitor Matos has been appointed as the club’s new fitness coach after spending the last three years as head of fitness and performance at Porto.
And Andreas Kornmayer joins Liverpool from Bayern Munich, where he was assistant fitness coach, and will take up a similar role on Merseyside.
Emphasis on fitness
Unsurprisingly, given the time of year, it was a fitness-focused session for those who were present, with plenty of running drills on show.
Lijnders was pictured leading a group of players through a shuttle run as Liverpool prepare for the new season under Klopp.
Mixed emotions
There was a mix of emotions among the players who were back at Kirkby, with some looking weary following a long campaign and others simply happy to be back.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez were among those who were smiling and joking as the pair made use of the facilities at the training ground.
Kind regards B. McDowell.
