🔴Live: Record Number of French Runoff Candidates Withdraw to Prevent Far-Right Victory.
Exit polls show far-right leader Marine Le Pen trailing President Emmanuel Macron by double digits in runoff vote.
As voters prepare to head to the polls for the second round of France’s presidential election, a record number of runoff candidates have withdrawn their candidacies in an attempt to prevent a far-right victory.
According to exit polls, far-right leader Marine Le Pen is trailing President Emmanuel Macron by double digits in the runoff vote. In an effort to prevent Le Pen from winning, several candidates who finished third or fourth in the first round of voting have withdrawn their candidacies and urged their supporters to vote for Macron.
Among the candidates who have withdrawn are: Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of the far-left party La France Insoumise; Éric Zemmour, the leader of the far-right party Reconquête; and Valérie Pécresse, the leader of the conservative party Les Républicains.
The withdrawal of these candidates is a significant development in the French presidential election. It is the first time that so many candidates have withdrawn from a runoff vote in order to prevent a far-right victory.
The withdrawals are likely to have a significant impact on the outcome of the election. Macron is now the clear favorite to win, and Le Pen’s chances of victory have been significantly diminished.
The runoff vote is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 24.
